Cinematography

Cinematography Analysis

Cinematography is a word that describes all the functions and conventions of films and videos in general. Directors use these techniques and know how to use them very well to get the best reactions out of their film. Camera shots are very important in the world of films as it conveys different feelings and emotions. It also helps the audience to get involved and grabs them to keep them interested. I have chosen to analyse three camera shots that has been used in the film 'Scream 4'.

The first shot I have chosen to analyse is a long shot of a house; you can tell its a long shot because you can see the whole house and the surroundings and this is helpful to make the audience anxious, so they are more in aged with the film. It also helps that it is night and its dark, creating shadows and having trees to make the place look even more scarier. It's is key to this genre of film because the audience are trapped in the moment and this creates fear and anxiety. I makes the audience expect what is about to happen and gives them a short clip on to the narrative of the film and creates a dramatic irony towards the film.

The next shot that I identified was a close shot and this time it is of the face of the victim. This is an important shot because you can see the emotions of the character and in this case you can clearly see that she is scared and shocked by what is in front of her. It is also a split second long which makes the audience jump and tells them that something bad is about to happen which is important to thriller films because it gets them and their emotions involved. It also shows you how vulnerable the victim is as she can't not defend herself from the killer because she is too scared.

I have chosen a mid shot to analyse last because this shot was used to create a new feeling. In this shot you can see the woman's top half and seeing this you can tell what mood she is in because of her body emotions. They show urgency and worry.this is because she knows what could happen next and because of this the audience know what will happen next and makes them uneasy. This is very useful because the audience is then open to more feelings like fear and shock.

By looking at these threes shots I realised that camera shots are very important  in the interaction of the audience and the character. It conveys the thoughts and feelings that the director wants to give over. Also the use of lighting increases these feelings, by using dark colours to make the audience scared and light colours for shock. This will help me in my project because I will be able to use a variety of shots and angles to create meaning and response.
